Class of 2010 |
Starting in 2001, the Miller School of Medicine adopted an integrated, learner-centered curriculum model, introducing explicit new themes that include professionalism, medical humanities, cultural competencies, leadership and interdisciplinary teamwork. The curriculum reform also included the establishment of “pathways of emphasis” such as genetic medicine, primary care, community health, child care, and dermatology. These pathways are intended to give students experiences in a specific field while still stressing the basic shared knowledge that all physicians gain in medical school. Two of these pathways are operational, with new ones to come online each year.
The Medical Student Pathway In Social Medicine began in March 2007. The Pathway provide students with a broad overview of the major themes of social medicine and health equity including: the social determinants of health, clinical care in resource poor settings, minority and immigrant health, health and development economics, gender equity, health as a human right and many other relevant topics. The program include didactic coursework, both required and elective, experiential learning and self-learning activities both conventional and web-based.
The pathway is spread over the four years of medical school and includes national and international experiences and research projects. Lee Sanders, M.D. and Erin Kobetz, Ph.D. are the Co-Pathway Directors.
